About This Image

We were on Chinitna Bay in Lake Clark National Park. It was a foggy morning when we saw this brown bear and a couple seagull friends out on the tide flats. I really liked the feel of the fog and the horizon seemingly disappearing into infinity.

Feedback Requested

I would love any thoughts or advice on how to make the composition better. Was I able to communicate that foggy infinite feel?

Thanks David

Well, I would have to say I’d feel safer photographing kangaroos than a bear!
At first glance, I thought the gull behnd the bear was problematic, but the more I looked the better I liked it. Love those pink feet. I think the birds add to the story.

I like David’s crop, but would consider leaving a bit more room on the bottom and the left side. I also played with a darker Linear Gradient from the bottom and a light one from the top…with a hint of blue. Not sure if that worked or not. Regardless, you have done a fine job of communicating the foggy feel.

Repost works well for me!

The original poster added a revised version of their image.

Repost looks good and @Glenys_Passier suggested edits might be worth investigated. A nice photo and gulls are always around when food scraps are available. I wonder what bringing up the shadows on the bear would do especially for making the eyes more apparent. Just a thought! I like the horizontal lines in the BG and the fogginess of th top of the frame. Well done…Jim

I like the foggy feel, Timothy, and the repost is a significant improvement. I’m not sure about the dark foreground, but I really like the gradient that @Glenys_Passier used on the top as a means of merging the water seamlessly with the sky. Not having a clue what the slope of the beach was, I’d suggest a lower point of view if it were possible, though I suspect it wasn’t.

Thank you David

Thank you Jim. I’ll try tweaking the shadows on the bear a bit:grinning_face:

Thank you Dennis. I will definitely try the gradients that you and Glenys suggested. I would have loved a lower POV but unfortunately I had to take what I could get.

The repost is lovely.

Thank you Glenys. I always appreciate your thoughts and advice

I can’t offer any constructive criticism, but I do think the photo is fantastic! It bothers me slightly the the bear’s head blocks the gulls wing, but nothing you can do about that. Great image!

Thank you Elizabeth. It would have been nice to get all of the seagull’s wing but you do get what you get:grinning_face:
