This is a Red-necked Grebe seen from the south jetty in Newport, Oregon. I like the sense of calm with the still water and the grebe peacefully preening itself.

Lovely image Allen. I like your description with the “sense of calm”. The water and the preening certainly have an almost relaxed feeling. I like that there’s enough ripples in the water to create some different colors and patterns.
I’m assuming a crop, but if not, my comment still stands. I like how you’ve position the bird in the frame. The head leaning “in” as opposed to looking out. And the classic compositional tool… the Rule of Thirds.

HI Allen, nice subject placement in the frame and I do get a sense of calm. The over the shoulder head turn is a nice element.

Beautifully presented image of this grebe, Allen. Looking at the thumbnail, I was thinking Pied Grebe, and this is a new one to me which is always a bonus. The sense of calm does come across very well.
