About This Image

A vivid rainbow breaks through the storm, arching over the sunlit landscape as lightning flashes beneath the retreating clouds.

Another one from the Sierra Vista area in southern Arizona

Feedback Requested

Dramatic enough ? Perhaps the rain clouds need some separation ?

Yes, busy but spectacular.

This is a wonderful storm image, Karl. The only tiny nit I have is the area I circled where there are some small dark clouds that could be mistaken for sensor dust. Your choice on whether to remove them.

Visual Notes

[A1] Little wisps of dark clouds bear a striking resemblence to sensor dust.

Karl: Marvelous scene and a great capture of the moment. Did you use a lightning trigger or was this serendipity? I do think it is a touch underexposed and a simple 1/3 stop bump helps me. I’m also torn regarding the structures. They’re a bit of an eye magnet and since the rainbow leads directly to them I drift away from the more interesting clouds.
One other unrelated item is the size of the image you’re posting. Site guidelines recommend sizing at 2000 pixels on the long side. By posting this at 6088x4189 the site is compressing this a bunch and I suspect that a lot of interesting detail is being lost. >=))>

@Dennis_Plank they look like dust spots but are in fact clouds - i have cloned these out

Thanks @David_Schoen @Bill_Fach - I do agree with increasing the expoaure a little - histogram clearly suggests so - thanks for pointing that out. I have toned down the upper left clouds and tried to improve on the main bolt

I checked the file size - 1.3 MB - so dont know where you are getting your size from. Any idea what this means when exporting from L:R ?

Karl,

Yet another fantastic weather, lightning, storm, and now rainbow landscape image.

I don’t really have anything to suggest as I love this as presented. Some good suggestions, but I think minor. Personally, I like the buildings; they do provide some context and scale and makes me wonder how isolated these folks are living in this grand landscape.

Do you consider yourself a storm chaser? Clearly you’re getting rewarded! Congrats!

I can’t give any constructive feedback but I think it is spectacular!

Karl: If you put your cursor on the bottom of your image you’ll see the dimensions. I don’t export from LR but do all of my final sizing in PS using the save for web feature in the Export dialogue. Once I export the full size image from LR to PS I go to Image Size and set the long side at 2000 pixels. I’ll do some sharpening and final tweaks and then when you go to Save For Web you will see the size in the lower left corner and a slider in the upper right. Site guidelines recommend staying under 3 MB. If you post an image larger than 3 MB the site downsizes it automatically. I don’t know exactly how that happens but my images never get changed and all of the detail I see on my screen ends up on the post. Hope that helps/clears things a bit. >=))>

Just started Lon - looking forward to more each year!

Spectacular - you even caught a bit of the outer rainbow. I think the dwelling “at the end of the rainbow” adds to the story. The occupant(s) are experiencing fear and hope in equal measure. Great capture of the decisive moment.

I spent about half of my life a couple of hours northeast of Sierra Vista, and I well remember the drama of the monsoon season. This captures both the light and the dark of those storms, the intensity of the squall followed by the break after. Great capture of that contrast.

amazing opportunities there! The problem is knowing how to chase and more importantly when to back off!
