About This Image
I found one of these hummingbird moth caterpillars enjoying a scarlet honeysuckle berry recently.

These are single shots. The first two images used a single speedlight and Angler 100 diffuser. The third image used ambient light only.
Any preference among these shots?

Allen, I like the natural light shot, because it better shows the subtle colors of the cat.s head and more contrast in the body of the cat. You’ve got excellent details throughout the cat. and in it’s meal.
Wonderful captures, all three! I can see elements in all three that I like, but overall I like the natural light one for reasons mentioned by @Mark_Seaver
In this case, I think your flash work is perfect, Allen. All three images looks fine to my eye with no real flash look to them. Beautiful work in all of them.
Allen: If I didn’t have the natural light version to compare I would grade both of the flash shots pretty high but for me the natural light is just the more pleasing image, perhaps because of the softer BG and lower contrast of subject to BG. Really nice job working these guys comprehensively. A fine subject superbly captured and presented.>=))>
The flash work in these images does reveal some of the other colors in the BG which I think can be tough to get if we expose for a darker BG. The natural light one does have some wonderful color pop too! The first one does have wonderful colors from the pale turquoise to orange, yellow, and greens. Quite frankly, I couldn’t dare to pick a favorite out of this bunch, but the clos-up has some very subtle, eye-catching colors. Well done…Jim.
I think the 3rd one with natural light has the best and most natural BG and rendering of the cat. , but the colours and pop of the first one steal the show IMHO
