The driveway from the road to the house where we stayed on our paddling trip to Maine last year was an unexpected source of many photos and this is one of them. I went out when it was gently raining and the light was really soft and the breeze almost non-existent. This section of Hay-scented fern was a natural draw for me and I took some time to isolate some little slices. This one worked best for its simplicity and drama. At least I thinks so.
Feedback Requested
Does the overall balance and composition work for you? I have a few other shots placing the trunk in different positions, but felt this worked the best. Also think I have some with just ferns and a less prominent tree.

Kris: This just screams “Spring”, or maybe summer. The freshness and density of the ferns is eye catching and I like how you’ve composed this with the tree in the middle. Well seen and even better captured and presented. >=))>
Simple and straight forward - and most certainly beautiful and engaging. Of course I don’t know your other trunk placement choices, but I don’t need/want to see them either, this composition works perfectly.
I’m hard pressed to be critical or find and nits or flaws. The only suggestion I can toss out there would be a slight vignette; simply to contain the view inward - if that makes sense. Otherwise, you nailed this one.
Maine is one of my favorite places, too! Beautiful image! The color of the fern surrounding the trunk of the tree is perfectly composed (center). The color vibrancy and saturation are spot on. Love this photo!
Thanks @Bill_Fach , @Lon_Overacker & @holly1 - ferns are magical aren’t they? When I was a kid there was a big patch of Cinnamon fern in the yard that I would hide inside. Cinnamon fern grows very tall and it was my own little glade. Probably my parents knew about it, but I felt it was my secret.
Anyway…about a vignette - I played with the idea, but ultimately wanted to show the natural shade from that tree and emphasize that by leaving the edges brighter as they were naturally. It isn’t the usual as we tend to close off the sides to bring out the subject, but in this case I felt it worked better. I’m curious if anyone else breaks the ‘rules’ in this way…how ingrained are our habits when processing(?). Hm…
