Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

A late season winter storm damaged the newly bloomed Yoshino Cherry tree. I wanted to capture the damage to the veins of the petals and the missing petals.

Specific Feedback

I’d like critique for this image as fine art. Any feedback is appreciated.

Hi Lynsie, great macro shot! I really enjoy macro shots in black and white. The stamens on the flower are nicely in focus and I love how the front flower is open so you can see in. The two flowers in the background make it nicely balanced as well!

Lynsie,

Such an expressive photo and the title is perfect for it. Your sepia treatment pushes that sentiment even further.

@JayD and @Youssef_Ismail, thank you both for taking the time to review the image!

Lynsie: This image does tell a story. We almost always look for the pristine perfect subject which this clearly isn’t but I think your comp and processing make this compelling. I do think a bit more contrast to brighten the blossoms a bit would help. I also went back and forth regarding the leaf entering the top edge and tried to remove it. Overall I think I like it gone but that’s a matter of taste. Nicely spotted, conceived and presented. Back to you. >=))>

@Bill_Fach , thank you! Some added contrast to the blooms does help the brown veining come through more. On the leaf, I’m back and forth on keeping it or removing it too. I like how there are three sets of pairs with the leaves, the flowers with petals, and beyond in the background the pair where only the pistils remain. I’m glad the story comes through. Any blooms that show natural processes or seasonal transitions are my ‘pristine’ subjects. I love capturing the stories they tell.
