Alien on Moon

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

This is an Echo Azure butterfly.
It almost looks like an alien has landed on the moon surface. I think the camera flare adds to the scene.

This is strictly not a macro photo but I took this lying on the ground wit my telephoto lens while out birdwatching. This is a miniscule butterfly, less than the size of a small cent or penny.

Specific Feedback

Does the flare add to the image or is distracting?
Any other feedback on exposure, comp, post-processing etc. welcome.

Technical Details

Camera Settings: Canon R4, 1/5000, f/10, ISO 800
Lens: Canon RF 100-500 F4.5-7.1 at 500mm

The flare doesn’t distract me here, nor does it add anything in my opinion. I like the aspect ratio, and I think I’d clone out the flare, especially as I find both FG and BG a bit bright. If you selected the butterfly, inverted and then lowered Highlights, then I’d find the shot gentler on the eye. That said, you might lose some of the lunar effect. But it would allow us to enjoy the main subject (and that excellent sliver of lunar surface) even more. Kudos for going real low and getting the whole insect in good focus.

Magnificent work Guarev to get oriented properly to make that razor thin depth of field work so beautifully. I like this a lot.

Thank you. Great feedback.

I’m with Dennis. Excellent. The flare: Your alien doesn’t have to be on earth’s moon, so the flare could be another moon somewhere out there.

Eye level to a butterfly on the ground makes for a nice shot, moon or no moon. Excellent details in the BF. A long lens makes for nice macro shots sometimes. It certainly gives you the shallow DOF which is perfect in this shot. Well done.

Guarev, your handling of the plane of focus is excellent, with the butterfly nicely sharp. I agree that while the flare doesn’t detract, it also doesn’t enhance the view of this small butterfly. I like the overall brightness as that fits the colors of the butterfly well.

Guarev: Welcome to Macro and thanks for a fine first post here. I love your POV and your DOF management especially. Really nice comp as well. I’m ambivalent about the flare/moon. The image would be good without it but including it makes the image a bit more imaginative and whimsical, especially since the butterfly seems to be looking directly at it. I’m curious, was this the only flare in the frame or did you make others go away? Again, thanks for a fine first post here. >=))>

Bill, thank you. This was the only flare in the image. There were a couple of small dust spots that I removed.
