About This Image

This is from the property on Vinalhaven where I stayed for a group kayak trip. There is a small fenced in cemetery with three graves (that we could see) and then next to that are several scattered over a small area. This one was so worn away by the elements that it can’t be easily read any longer. Living in Wisconsin means there are no cool, old cemeteries and I miss them. It was nice to stumble on this one. As with many cemeteries from the 18 and 19th centuries, I’m not really sure if there is a person under this stone as storm damage can cause real havoc, but I like to think that the person was remembered at least for a little while.

Feedback Requested

With an image like this, you could go in a lot of directions processing wise. I chose to emphasize the nature part by using a preset that really amplified the greens. I can’t go shoot it again, but editing ideas are welcome.

Kris: Perhaps it’s a bit maudlin but I also like to explore old cemeteries. The quiet history and somber mood of these mostly forgotten shrines is humbling, sobering and in a more positive note triggers some contemplative musings. With regard to the images, I like what the Gen Fill did. Nice find, story and capture. >=))>

I can “almost” read the inscription if I go to the large view… Old graveyards are interesting.

Very nice find, well presented! I like the gen fill version, and that it stayed subdued. The berries make a lovely wreath!

Thanks @Bill_Fach , @Mark_Seaver & @Diane_Miller - we were a little surprised to see well(ish)-tended graves alongside completely ignored ones. Strange. But it was a nice find. I was surprised that the Gen Fill did such a subtle job. Each of the 3 choices was pretty subdued, actually.

Funny about old cemeteries, a famous one in Massachusetts, Mount Auburn, was build as a public park as well as a place to park one’s deceased. It has plant specimens from around the world and was meant for people to picnic and walk as well as a burial ground. Of course when I lived an hour from it I never went thinking there was always tomorrow. Alas.
