BIG FOOT!

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

This grebe has been hanging around Tim’s Pond . It has been wet and cold. Not sure how long it will remain. Hopefully, not much longer. The pond freezes solid enough for people to ice fish with no open water anywhere.

Specific Feedback

it was fairly dark and cold. I could not use tripod so it is handheld. I had trouble making the grebe light enough without blowing out the water. A slight crop off the bottom because of some out of focus reeds.

Technical Details

Canon 7DmkII; 100/400 at 400; 5.6; 1/800th; cloudy WB; 1600 ISO.

Very nice, Jim. I love the ripples and the big foot (they are huge for the size of the grebe). Well done.

Hi Jim, I think you handled the water well and I still see plenty of detail in the bird. That is one monster sized foot for a bird that size! Well captured.

Dennis and Allen, Thank you.

Jim, the foot is as almost as large as the bird! Nice catch, with cool ripples.

Hi Jim
The framing works, everything brings my eye to the Grebe. I can’t get over the foot. Nice work.
Peter

Great title on this one Jim. Nice look at this little big foot. I like the ripples. Sometimes you take what you get with the lighting and make the most of it. Neat shot.

Sandy, Peter and ED, Thank you for your comments. It’s such a photogenic bird, I’ll probably post a couple more and hopefully I’ve made the most of what nature sent my way.)

Nicely handled tonalities for both the water and the bird, and a cute pose. I had no idea they had huge feet, but as quickly as they dive, it makes sense.

Diane, It can swim from one end of the pond to the other very quickly. Great swimmers, but terrible walkers. I’ve seen one trying to walk on a beach; it could only go a few feet and then fall down.
