Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

Its a butterfly season here after some unexpected rains in the summer. I have always fancied to get a macro shot of this guy . In the open field , they are normally fast and unpredictable but not today ;).

Santhru, beautiful sharp capture, no small feat while in the field. I like the boka background. In terms of a critique I would say the lighter yellow line in the background a bit distracting. I wonder if that could be cloned out or ruduced so it’s not a line??

A nice look at this beauty Santhru. I would like to see a bit more room to the right and less on the left, giving it the feel that the BF has more room to move in the direction it is facing. He is a colorful BF, and stands out nicely with the BG.

I agree with @Shirley_Freeman - more room on the right, less on the left; and maybe a bit more space along the bottom. Then remove small green bit in LRC and bright bit of leaf along the right. Pansies are beautiful, and the Blue is one of the best. You caught it at a good angle and we can see a flower, so there’s a lot to like here.

Thanks for the feeback Alice

Thanks for the feedback Shirley :). I would also like the composition you have mentioned. Unfortunately there is no such space in the original image.

Thanks for the feedback Mike :). I have done the rework whereever possible and its online now.

Looks good, Santhru.

I love it!!

A wonderful image, and the rework is a nice improvement! I like the composition – even though the BF is “aimed” to the right, the three leaves are very nicely enclosed and balanced in the frame. Its position does create a bit of tension, but that is a good thing, adding to the feeling that it is about to flit away. Those leaves are very pleasing and complement the BF rather than distracting so are an important part of the composition. If you were so inclined, expanding the canvas just a little to the bottom and right with content-aware or AI fill would probably work well, but I don’t have the feeling that it is needed. If anything, a very slight crop from the top, or a subtle dark vignette there, is also be an idea to try. The brownish areas at the top pull my eye a bit. But a lovely image in any case!

Thanks for the detailed feedback Diane

Santhru: I’m late to this but wanted to add my kudos for a fine capture. Because I can sometimes be a bit of a curmudgeon I will offer some advice for improvement. Like the others I think there is too much room on the left. The leaf on that side is nice but it really doesn’t add much or anything to the overall comp. You want all the attention on your subject. By cropping aggressively the left leaf is now a supporting element not commanding much attention. With the crop you have the butterfly looking along the line of the leaf on the right and everything is going in the same direction. The head could also be a bit sharper. The capture is spot on but doing some careful sharpening with the Camera Raw filter brings out more detail in the head and also in the wings. The good news is that the capture itself was excellent, it just needs a few tweaks in processing. Keep up the good work and hoping you keep getting great opportunities like this. >=))>
