Broken Snow

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

@John_Williams’s snow photos stimulated me to wonder about what I might do with the relatively rare but long lasting snow event here in MD. Over a week ago, we got 6" of snow with another inch of sleet/rain that immediately froze into a hard, very slippery crust. Walking, even with treking poles was dangerous until yesterday, when we finally got a bit of thawing. To fill the bird feeders on our deck, I went out and stomped through the icy crust, leaving lots of crusty bits.

Specific Feedback

This is mostly just for fun, but it does record the result of a somewhat unusual weather event. There are four “foot stomps” in this view.

Technical Details

R5, 100-500 @ 500, 1/320 s, f/13, tripod. A 15 shot stack for dof.

Hi Mark,
This is some wonderful thinking outside the box IMO. I like the lack of scale in the image as it does stir the imagination a little bit. Your exposure for the snow was perfect as I am enjoying all those textures. Even though this was just for fun this turned out rather nicely.

Hi Mark,
I like this. It’s so different from the one that inspired it, and that’s the best kind of inspiration, in my opinion. I like the chunkiness and the angles of the slabs of snow. There is an animal, personality to the slabs, almost like penguins waddling about or seals. It’s evokes a sense of both a snowy plain with no living creatures, and a community of playfulness. I’m guessing you won’t run past snow to the icy pond as quickly now.

Nicely done, Mark. You have a couple of compositions here and they echo each other.

I think the picture is fantastic, Mark. It tells the story of how the ice moves.

I especially like the gray and grayish-yellow color gradients.
