I’d welcome thoughts on what would most strengthen this image, either artistically or technically. I’m trying to create a sense of the water churning against the rocks. Is the Pelican too small in the frame? Any thoughts/help appreciated.
Hi Allen, since you’re obviously going for an environmental shot with the bird included, I think small in the frame is fine. I’m wondering what more space top and bottom would look like. I like this version as is though, with the in flight pelican facing the churning water. Nice view of the wings and face on the bird. Black and white works for me too even though I can’t help but wonder what a color version would look like. A well composed image.
Thanks, Allen and Peter for your thoughts. I’ve attached a color version and posted a revision with more space . My original focus was on the waves, but looking at the revised image, I like that the rocks give some context to the wave action.
Allen, my first thought was a great image of the brown pelican gliding over the surf; despite it’s smaller presence in the overall scene, the bird steals the show for me. And when you write about the “water churning against the rocks,” I thought, what rocks? Yes, the water is turbulent, but we don’t know why, I think your revision really nails what you were trying to say - even though the pelican is a little bit smaller.
B&W works regardless and great job capturing the details of the pelican and the action in the surf.
You didn’t get the dozen of them floating synchroniously across the rough surf? dang.
I somehow missed this one earlier, Allen. I liked the original version, but the suggestions for widening the scope, particularly including the rocks were excellent and I really love the revised version.
