A collection of images from a few different coastal shoots focusing on tidal pools.
Self Critique
I spent a lot of time just being with the subjects and trying new techniques. I’m sure there can be some processing tweaks and adjustments along with some more cohesion between my selected images.
Creative Direction
I would like something tightly themed but also cohesive in imagination.
Specific Feedback
I’m open to all feedback users are willing to provide.
Intent of the project
Additional Details: Looking to put something together for both NLPA project and also eventual publication.
Alternate Images
Please provide feedback on whether any of these images would fit more cohesively in the project.
I’m no good at putting things together (taking things apart works better for me) so I won’t comment on the collection, but I do find all the images worthy of attention and praise. But I have to say how much I love the top one!! (Didn’t even realize it was a project until I clicked on the thumbnail.) Fascinating refraction patterns and lovely detail in the bubble outlines, with such nice colors! I think just bubbles could be a worthy theme!
Wonderful collection. You don’t say where they were taken, but they are very representative of the Oregon Coast. I especially like image 1. Most interesting layering of the bubbles over the interwoven lines below.
Alright David, bear with me as I walk through a few things. First I think this would be a good idea for NLPA – nicely different than the more “standard” landscape projects. Though, I see two to three different ideas to explore here. One is the straightforward, though beautiful detail images of the sea anemone. Two is the more abstracts of the bubbles and the longer exposure images. And three is the very abstract images of the tide pool flows. Ideas one and two could work together. As well as two and three. But going from sharp details to complete abstracts might be a bit much. Especially since you only have up to 10 images for NLPA. And some advice I heard from them about projects was less is more. Try to get it to like 5-6 then only add something if it helps expand the project. If it repeats or is distracting, don’t add it. (Easier said than done for sure.) My favorite images are the long exposure of the rocks – the first one, not your alternate. The first is much cleaner and a great mood. The alt is too busy and too many things at the edges of the frame. Tide pool flow image 4. And the bubbles. With the starfish one, again your first is cleaner. The alt one my eye is drawn more to the white flow of water and not the starfish. I would also try lightening up the starfish legs a little to bring them out of the background. (Unless you want it to look more like it’s grown from the rocks around it.) Sorry, this is long, hope it’s helpful since this looks like a worthwhile project to explore. Good luck.
That was the feedback I was looking for! This project is for NLPA. I’m putting it out there to get the kind of thoughts you just provided as far as what works together and what doesn’t. .I agree there are almost two projects going, possibly 3 with the water flow abstracts even though they are all shot in the same tidal pools along the central coast of California . I just arrived at the same tidal pools today and hope to get a few more additional images over the next few days..
Hope your outing today went well. A couple more things: And try not to photograph to the contest. Always photograph what you want the way you want to. Then later, edit to the contest. If that makes sense. Good luck.
