About This Image
I hope this qualifies as late summer (8/31/17, which in Alaska probably qualifies as Fall). On our 2017 Alaska trip Chrissy and I (mostly me) indulged ourselves with a doors off flight from the park entrance to Mount Denali. Weather and winds kept us from making it all the way but we got close enough for some nice views and images of the mountain. On the way out there were many other opportunities and this was one of my favorites.

The ride was a little bumpy and my only restraint was a single lap belt. Of course all of the shots were hand held and with the longer lens I was concerned about camera shake. I think the image stabilization handled things pretty well. I did boost the contrast of the original capture but otherwise did not do anything to boost the colors. Still, too saturated? Also, would you crop from the bottom to 4:5?

Great timing for me with this image, Bill. I take off for a week in the Denali NP on Saturday, staying at Camp Denali despite the road closure, so we are flying from the entrance area. There will be 6 of us plus a guide/pilot, so I’m pretty sure the doors will be closed the whole way, but I’ll inquire about some aerial opportunities while I’m there. I’m going with Dave Shaw, who runs photography workshops up there and in Colorado. I did an Aurora workshop with him back in 2023 near Wiseman, so I’m excited about going during less frigid, albeit probably wet weather.
Oh, yeah, back to you and your image : I think I do prefer the 4x5. It lets us explore the nuances in the snow a little more carefully. In fact, I can image a square crop emphasizing the top half in the 4x6 version.
Lots to love in both of these. I especially like the snow and the lingering yellow flowers. Talk about edges of seasons!

I really love the tones on this Bill and the image is beautifully composed. It was interesting because when I opened the image my first thought was to crop off a little of the bottom, then I scrolled down and saw your cropped version but I didn’t like the proportion of the image as much. My vote would be for the top image. I think the colors look great as is, not too saturated at all to me. The varying elements and colors give the eye a lot to look and is one of those great images that you can lose yourself in for a while. Excellent work!

The colours are fine and its an amazing view.
Really dont mind about the crop. The taller one emphasises the leading line as you have a longer run at it… but the bit that’s cropped doesn’t add much.
The page shrinks the width so the 4x5 appears magnified which of course it isn’t were you to print them the same width.
Great colors and composition. I can’t quite explain why, but the 4x5 crop has more impact for me. Glad that seat belt worked. Did you venture to Talkeetna and take a flight up to I think it was Ruth Glacier where the climbers start up Denali? Ed and his wife and I took the trip in 2000 for an unforgettable experience. Flying amongst and between all those craggy rocky mountainsides was a little unnerving.

What a wonderful experience and perspective, Denali doesn’t show itself all that often. The colors, texture and lines are gorgeous. I prefer the crop of the first image, gives it a bit more breathing room.
