### Questions for Viewers

Since it’s getting close to Halloween, I thought I would post my Evil Eye photo for your initial reaction.

### About This Image

I took this photo earlier this month in Abisco National Park, Lapland Sweden. It was towards the end of a long day and I started using my phone to take photos of interesting textures on the birch trees. I i didn’t see the Evil Eye until I looked at my screen after I’d taken the image and my first reaction was shock.

Very, very cool, Alice. Definitely an evil eye and taking a second to find the second is a nice feature. I have no idea how you did this or for sure what it is,though the lichen would indicate that it’s probably either wood or rock. I’m also not sure whether it was mostly processing to get this look or if a portion of it was done in camera. So now I have to go read the grayed out stuff!

Well, I still don’t know how you got it to look this way. And I just noticed that the upper evil eye comes with the rest of its face.

Dennis, I actually did very little editing to this image, I lightened the white of the eye a little but the larger “eye” was very obvious and staring right back at me. It took me a few seconds to see the second eye. Anyway a fun find on a birch tree.

This feels so other-worldly. Or maybe it’s a Dali or Picasso! Very enjoyable.

It’s quite abstract for a nature photo. It’s really hard to clearly identify what anything is.

Hi Alice!

I love this! It’s so fun to capture a scene that really makes people ponder…this does exactly that! The editing around the eye is perfect and really brings my attention to the “pupil” first. Great abstract!!

Love this! The eyes are just creepy enough to hold my attention and but the large upper portion with relatively little happening seems to let my eye wander out of frame (even though I want to stay in it!) A tighter crop from the top might help a bit with that. The lichen is easily recognizable so I’m guessing wood, but it does look like it might also be galaxies, or even mud volcanoes. This is a really fun image!

Nancy, thank you, I was wondering if I should crop some off the top, I’ll give it a try. It’s a birch tree

This is fun, Alice. Very timely for the Halloween season. At first I thought it was under water, but the lichen threw me. It feels a little soft, but that could be compression on upload (or my eyes this morning 😅 ).I also like the idea of a little crop off the top. Not too tight, as it’s good to keep some forehead in there with the evil eyes.

Very intriguing image! Indeed, rather than evil eyes, my first reaction was thinking of big fish or whales or leviathans in a stormy sea, something between Jonas’ story, Moby Dick or Pinocchio… In this sense, I prefer the uncropped version where the “sea” is more visible. Very cool picture

Antonello, thank you for giving me so many different ways to view this image, Moby Dick for sure!!
