About This Image

Cloudy day in the higher Cascades.I liked the clouds surrounding the mountains in the background and the subtle color change in the trees contrasting with the evergreens..

Feedback Requested

I am wondering if softening the picture would be more effective. Now seems fairly crisp but, it is fall.

Charlie: I lived in Spokane in the early 80s but that was in pre-photography days and I so missed opportunities in the Cascades and the Palouse. I especially like the sky with my only tiny concern the invaders in the ULC. However, overall I’m OK with them. If there were less I would counsel making them go away but there are enough of them that it doesn’t come off as a failure to police the edges of the frame. Would love to see this same scene a few days later if the aspens were glowing. Great image for the challenge. >=))>

I am so ready for this kind of weather and scene here in the Sierra!

I like the composition. The tree on the left helps balance against weight of the pine forest on the right and helps frame the sky.

I do think the sky could use a tiny bit of tonal separation between the clouds and empty areas. I love the clouds hanging the peaks, so if you do adjust the sky, be careful.

The trees (Cottonwood?) look very nice. The saturation is perfect.

Is there more of the foreground in the RAW file? The FG seems cut-off to me. The base of the image needs more breathing room, I think.

It’s a nice image and is well seen.

I did have a bit more of the bottom. I tried to put a little blue tone in the sky but, it effected the middle cloud as well.Maybe OK.

Charlie, the additional foreground really improves the composition. The bit of blue you added works because one would expect to see a little atmospheric haze in the distance.

Nice job on the tweaks!

I agree 100% with @Preston_Birdwell’s comments., especially about the ULC balancing the trees on the right. And the FG.

Charlie, I too like how you’ve framed the trees and the distant mountains. The subtle colors look right for early fall. I was going to suggest cropping out the riverbed at the bottom, but the exta rocks there work well. The extra blue fits also.

Thanks for the feedback. I woulod like to redo the photo in weeks to come to show the progress. We are traveling for the next three weeks but, will look at agaion when we get bwck.

Charlie,

This is a lovely “early autumn” landscape image. I too would love to see this scene a little later in the cycle… but then this tells exactly the story of the changing seasons. Well seen and captured.

I agree that your edited version is a pretty big improvement. There was much more at the bottom, but what was revealed made a big, big difference. Even the slight toning in the sky really added a subtle, but clear improvement.

IMHO, an image like this almost requires sharpness simply because of the leaves. Leaves any softer and it seems like a focus or dof field mistake. What might work here is a little Orton. That could give the trees a bit of a glow. A personal choice for sure.

Here’s a nitty nitpick for you. There’s a spec in the sky just right of the centered cloud up top. Not a dust bunnie, but I suspect a bird… no biggie, but I had to see what it was… which means it should go, at least for me.

Thanks. That was great feedback. Unfortunately, we are traveling for the next three weeks and am without my computer so. I will certainly check the spot when we get home. Heading to Montana and the Tetons so I hope to get more of the changing colors.

Hi Charlie,

Your revision is definitely the ticket IMO as I quite like the slight blue toning in the sky. The little bit of extra canvas along the bottom works as well as it gives that fallen tree a little breathing room. The framing looks great and the clouds are a real plus here; especially those towards the right side of the frame. This definitely is a good representation of the beginnings of the autumn season. Very nicely done.

Thanks. Hope to get the same shot in a few weeks to see the changes
