First and Last

Last

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

Was up early this morning with the promise of good light and calm conditions and was rewarded with these two. We are at the end of the iris bloom and the start of the day lily bloom. We had an incredible harvest of red and blue Louisianna Iris this spring and the day lilies look to be no less prolific. This was the first day lily to open and the last iris before the final bud opens tomorrow or the next day. A bit of a changing of the guard and I’m looking forward to the next several weeks. >=))>

Specific Feedback

On Last I considered removing the leaf on the left but felt it gave some visual balance and acted as a framing element. Your thoughts?

I love the leaf on the left in “Last”, Bill. You’re right about it framing the blossom and it adds a welcome element in an otherwise empty space.

In “First”, the out of focus light green leaf leaving the corner of the upper right petal and exiting the frame tends to pull my eye out of the frame a bit. The others don’t bother me.

Looks like a wonderful flower time.

Beautiful, Bill. I agree with Dennis about the leaf on the left.

Bill, just a marvelous image! The colours are striking, especially the yellow lily. The sharp flower and buds are perfect against the OOF other leaves. I agree the upper right leaf can go, and also, perhaps, the one at the lower middle edge, below the lily petal.
The iris is nicely-balanced withe the framing leaves, but the upper right sliver seems a little distracting.
Anxiously awaiting more of your exquisite flowers!

Both images are top notch Bill! You must have a beautiful garden. I have a great garden, but its almost dark because of tree canopy and growing plants like these beauties has not worked well.

I love the iris with its little droplets and perfect colour. The leaf on the left does not bother me and you are right; it balances the image.

If I was to suggest anything it would be the removal of the stem behind the upmost petal of the iris. Careful work might also include the leaf behind the bud stem?

I meant to comment earlier – these are both a 10 on my “Wow” scale. The Daylily is gorgeous, with perfect color and texture. I love the composition with the bud. The leaf mentioned is a small point for me but it would be easy to select the flower and inverse the selection and clone that area to soften/darken it or remove it.

The Iris is dripping with beauty and the slightly unusual composition is wonderful. The leaf in the UL is vital to the composition. The one exiting behind the bud might be darkened slightly, along with its segment between the bud and the flower. I think the composition would hold up to just a squeak more room on all edges, but that’s just a personal opinion. (Maybe I’m a little claustrophobic and don’t realize it?)

But that is a tiny voice speaking – both are simply gorgeous!

My feral iris are just starting to bloom, up in our little alpine valley micro-climate. They have been outrageous in town for a couple of weeks.
