Fish or Bird?

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I can’t decide if this looks like a fish or a bird. I took this image on one of the cold, wet and foggy days in Yosemite. We were walking along the river looking for a decent composition in the unfriendly conditions. Kyle spotted this scene and I moved in after he was done - thanks Kyle!

Specific Feedback

All comments are welcome. To me, the simplicity called for a high-key approach in processing. Does this work?

Love thisi Steve! Came out awesome and great job on the b&w conversion and processing! The contrast, “black blacks and white whites” are done beautifully!

Now I remember that moment quite well. I had gone one way, you guys the other way. When we joined back up it was you or John that wanted to show me this cool scene you all had found… Then I said, “hold your beer…” (well, I didn’t really say that…) but I basically chimped my camera… “I already got that…” LOL. Well, not so fast big guy… I’m looking at my 2 images from the scene and your post here… they are NOT the same twigs in the water! So the jokes on me! Same area, same idea, but different twigs breaking the surface. And if Kyle found it first, that wouldn’t surprise me - he always does!

Anyway… great job with this! Love it.

Oh, sorry, I never answered your question. Honestly, I don’t see either a fish or a bird. I can’t really make out anything in particular. I just love the simplicity of the little branches, the curves and shapes, all helped with the reflected counterparts.

Hey Steve,

Great eye to see and capture this and render it so minimalistic.

My initial impression was a bird. The more I look at it, it becomes a Peace Dove.

Beautiful job on the B&W conversion, Steve. As Lon said, white whites and black blacks. Nice high key effect. I see more of a fish but after pondering this I see more of crawdad…maybe. I didn’t honestly see anything when I first opened this but then I really sat and just looked at this and I can see all sorts of things now. I think I see a squid also. Ok, enough of that. Wonderful image, Steve!

I love this! Fish or bird? It actually looks like me when I hop out of bed and put on my wonky glasses.

The simplicity and the treatment has worked a treat. Even though I realise it’s a reflection, it’s not easy to decifer and I like that.

Thank you @Lon_Overacker, @Marylynne_Diggs, @David_Haynes and @Glenys_Passier for your kind comments. I appreciate it.

This is totally wonderful!! Quite a puzzle what is reflected and what is “real”. The shapes are fascinating and the B/W treatment perfect! And the 2 bits in the upper corner deserve extra points!!
