On my Walk at the Park and this guy was hiding in the Leaves. He was moving his head chasing bugs. So I thought I would shoot a few frames and go with a simple, soft and hidden style of image.

Does this work in B&W. Did I create a soft tone and question the eye. ???
Your processing works for me anyway. The brightest area is just behind the birds head so we are taken to the obvious starting point to unravel /decode this nice abstract composition .
The empty space on the left holds/pulls the eye til you realise its created by the heron and its reflection - and the image is eventually resolved in my brain.
Colour would be too easy to identify the bird and doesn’t then succeed as an abstract puzzle.
A clever and interesting photograph.
To get the puzzle to playout a little easier you might darken the bright areas on the left edge, by the leaf and where the bubbles are, and the very white tail feathers

Just getting out and walking especially parks you never know what you may see.
Hi Gill, I like the different and abstract feel to this image also. Makes the view take a step back and contemplate what is going on here. B&W works well I think.
Thanks. I have become a dedicated B&W photographer. The shadow of this bird helps balance the image the more I look at it. It was a good fun day at the small park. You never know what you may see or feel.
An excellent composition, Gill. i love the leaves in this one. I do think bringing down that bright spot in the middle of the tail would be a good idea as it looks anomalous given the tonality in the rest of the image.
Thanks. I have gone B&W totally for the most part. I thought the bright spot helped it look more natural. I may vignette it some. Bring the eyes more to the center. But not to much editing. I’m trying not to over think or edit these days.
Really late to the party Gill. Like others, I agree! Such an unusual image and the B&W treatment is the way to go. I know you said you were keeping it soft but I feel there is another version that is a lot stronger. It would make for a beautiful fabric print. Not soft and hidden, but bold and hidden. So many variations from a single frame. Well done!!

I apologize for the late reply. This image immediately caught my eye the day you posted it, I’ve just had a busy few days. I think the B&W processing is perfect for this and in fact I don’t think it works in color. The heron is truly disguised, and if not for the lower body and reflection would be difficult to pick out at first glance.
I to like the rendering Glenys provided. For me personally I would choose your version as a print, and probably the other for something like a pillow. It’s less realistic but somehow more artsy to my eye.
I’m also late here, but have to say how much I love this! A lot of very interesting shapes and relationships came together and for me, it’s the reflection that makes it all work! Super seeing and a wonderful final image! I never would have thought of the super contrast that @Glenys_Passier did, but it works too. Without the water surface being obvious it steps into another dimension!
Thanks. I have done a new edit and I think it’s better. Glenn’s edit blew me away. Don’t know how she did it. I keep trying to make the best B&W images I can. Thanks for showing interest.

Gill. I have no problems at all with using the edited version. Your file size presented here could be a problem. It’s quite small, and to bring it up to 2MB? It might fall to bits? I don’t do any “upscaling” and I would be clueless on how to do that.
I can walk you through my process, though. It wasn’t difficult.
I don’t understand that My file was 10mb on my lap top when i posted this image. I did try to do another edit in your style. Kinda close. I love what you did. I have shown others and they really like your edit. So I will use both mine original and your edit in my book this fall. " Walk" … is the title. Just images of things i see and feel as I walk through the Parks and Bridges. Thanks again…
