**Critique Style:** Standard

The photographer is looking for thoughtful feedback on the image as a whole, especially around the areas noted below.

**Feedback Focus:** Artistic / Expressive

### About This Image

I seem to be struggling with a whole lot of images. When we go west we normally bypass tiny towns to get more remote, but we decided to explore around these tiny towns. The landscape is oceans of wheat fields and silos with barely a tree and the only vegetation was the roadside verge. Almost all the images from this area are small birds, fence posts and wire and big landscape with small birds. This is where the struggle is.

### Feedback Requested

This will be the first of many roadside shots of small birds. Interested to know if they hold your interest for more than a second. Is the bird too small, post too big?

Hi Glenys, this definitely holds my attention. What a great pose with that uplifted tail. I like the use of negative space in the image. I think it offsets the large perch well. Fine sharpness and pleasing background. The yellow in the image is another element of interest. I’m assuming they are wildflowers along the road.

Since I can’t sleep and I it’s about 3am here, I decided to see what the image would look like with the yellow taken out and the white (poop?) removed from the stump. See below:

Think I might like your original a bit better as the yellow provides some depth to the photo as well.

Hi @Glenys_Passier

I like your crop and the blue tail and yellow set each other off nicely. The images you anticipate will be rather similar but colours will allow variation.

This portrait is lovely, not sure about the yellow either but on balance I’d leave it in and the textures in the background. All personal taste but I think I would process in the same way as you have. I would remove the foreground yellow but not behind the bird

Very nice capture

Huw

I like the almost monochrome look of the image with the accent of the blue tail and the light green vegetation. I think the out of focus vegetation in front of the fence post works fine, but I would probably remove the one behind the bird which is rather bright and distracting to me. The composition looks good and I wouldn’t want to take anything off the bottom as it would make the post look too short and fat. Fairy Wrens are always a hit with me.

An attractive image, Glenys. I like the pose with the perky blue tail and the perch adds interest. The background is a nice complementary addition. I agree with Dennis’s thought about removing the background yellow.

What a cute little bird!! Wrens are so much fun! I love the shoot-through vegetation and can relate to environments where there is not much inherent beauty, so I think you’ve done a commendable job of finding a very pleasing environment with such nice subtle colors. No suggestions, just kudos!

Thankyou @Allen_Sparks I’m sorry you can’t sleep. I can sleep upside down on a barbed-wire fence, anywhere, anytime. Not sure if that’s a good thing.
I rather liked the yellow flowers, but can see, at least some of them are a little distracting. I like your version without the yellow. I saw the the poo and forgot to remove it.

Thanks @Huw_Thomas ! It seems the yellow is the nit.

Thank yoyu @Dennis_Plank ! Another yellow nit. You are quite right about getting the balance right between post and bird.

Thanks @Allen_Brooks ! I liked your comment about the perky blue tail. I thought it would be a nice match for the yellow flowers. Maybe a toned down yellow?

Thank you @Diane_Miller !

@Glenys_Passier , being able to sleep is a VERY good thing!! And I’m LMAO at a picture of you napping on a barbed wire fence!! I’m thinking of those African cats we see draped over a limb with all four legs hanging down!
Since I damaged my back (three years ago now!) I’ve hardly had a decent night’s sleep. It’s taking a toll. But a fix is finally in the works, awaiting scheduling for a minor surgery. Hoping it proves enough to last a few years.

@Diane_Miller , I know how important sleep is and I am truly blessed to have that ability. I can only imagine how cranky I would become if I couldn’t get a decent sleep. I hope future “fixes” will remedy your back issues.

Lovely Wren with its tail up. LOvely the texture pof the tree stump as well as the soft background.

My personal taste is to tone down the yellow spots

Congratulations on the EP! Well-deserved for this lovely image created in what sounds like a not-lovely environment.

@Karl_Zuzarte , thank you! It seems like the yellow needs to go, or toned down.

@Diane_Miller Thanks Diane! The environment wasn’t un-lovely, just hard for the birds with the absence of trees, but shows how adaptable they are.
