I am glad this site allows for people in the Landscape. There are a lot of Falls Creek Falls photos but I think having a person in the image gives a much better feel for how magnificent this waterfall in So. Washington state is.

Any comments appreciated.
Beautiful light and scene. I am on the fence about the person being in the image. While the person provides a sense of scale, for me it would have more impact as a grand scene without, if that makes any sense. But that is just me, I am sure others will think quite the opposite. I love the bright hazy light at the top. Great effect.
I love the lighting and your composition in this shot. Iām afraid I agree with above that I am not a fan of the person in this shot. I think people can add something to an image but in this case I think your composition in the landscape already speaks for itself and the guy taking a picture on his phone takes away from it.
Well Dan, someone has to be a contrarian⦠I like the person in this image. Not only is the human element good for perspective and scale, but also it helps create a story - perhaps not a strictly ānatureā story, but one of āaweā that I think we all appreciate being out there in nature and especially in front of such a great spectacle. The light hitting the mist above adds another story telling element.
As far as not having that person there, I think actually creates issues with this particular composition. Without the person, thereās a bare spot of land, which actually would come across as like a viewing platform, given the hint of a trail at the bottom-right. I also think that space would be a bit empty without the person. And so for all those reasons, I like this quite a lot.
Dan, this is really a beautiful scene and the light and fog/mist above the falls creates a dreamland kind of mood. For me, the mood created would be better without the person. The processing looks really nice to my eye and the foreground tree adds nice balance. With or without the person I really think this is a winner! I really need to get to the Pacific Northwest to shoot!
Firstly, awesome place, interesting perspective, and nice natural framing.
Iām not sure how I feel about the ultrabright sun rays/glow. I know thatās how the light hits when it comes through the trees, but the rays/glow sorta compete with the beautiful tiered falls, since they are the brightest element in the scene. Have you played around with pushing more of the glow to the top of the falls? Just a thoughtāitās nice as is and is different than other images that typically show the light at the top of the fallsāso thatās worth something!
I donāt mind the person and think he adds a nice focal point. He is also catching some nice light. I only wish he wasnāt taking a picture, but rather just there taking in the scene. That being said, his arms coming together (to hold the phone) creates a stronger focal point with more graphical (perhaps less emotional) impact and catches my eye. As Lon said, because you have a visible trail and bare spot, I think the person tells the story and offers the perspective of you the photographer as well as that of the other chap below.
Thereās a lot going on here and it looks like you managed it well!
This is a beauty, Dan. Really well composed. Personally, Iām fine with the person in the scene - it certainly gives the scene scale and make me want to be there. Not sure if itās possible but I think Iād prefer if those highlights of the mist were burned down a bit. I find that that potion of the image is a real eye grabber.
Well Dan, you are certainly giving that 14mm Rokinnon lens a good workout, itās very effective for this composition. I like the inclusion of the person in the shot, and also that the person is doing something other than standing straight up with both arms in the air.
I also like the angles that the trees are placed on the right, they make an awesome frame.
I like the light. Itās on the edge of being overexposed but itās not. I also like that the person isnāt posing. The āLittle Instagram Man with arms raisedā is becoming quite cliche.
Sense of scale is a thingā¦though the person crouching taking a cellphone shot doesnt help the cause here imo. Love the quality of light. I know these scenes are tricky but looks like the highlights were blown and recovered. Also prefer (personally) just a bit longer a shutter as the water seems āin betweenā frozen and moving. Lots of good hereā¦just a few tweaks and you got a banger.
