About This Image
This image was taken a few years ago in the White Mountains of NH and is one of those sunsets that I will never forget. This view is from Sunset Hill looking towards Mount Lafayette. Whenever Mike and I are in the White Mountains of NH this is our go to location whenever there are some clouds in the sky around sunset. More often than not, something magical happens and I want to be there with the camera to capture it. The reds were quite vibrant that particular evening so I just left them that way.

Ed, the amount of red throughout the image is pretty amazing. I do like how you’ve set it off with just a touch of dark shadow at the bottom and bits of blueish sky across the top.
Wow, that is some pretty intense color! And I imagine you had to dial it back in processing too!
It’s pretty clear, at least I’m thinking, that the colors are reflecting/bounding off the sky creating that universal color across the landscape?
I almost just want to see or make this more about the clouds by cropping from the bottom. But then if you cropped out the rock formation and shadows at the bottom, you would lose to much.
Now I wasn’t there to base this on experience, but have you considered boosting the contrast in the mountains, and especially at the ridge/rock center bottom? I’m not sure what that would do if it would take away from the mood or not.
Fascinating light! I assume you have tried various tweaks and don’t even know what software you use, but I wonder about adding some local contrast (probably would work equally on clouds and FG) with a tweak of Clarity and/or Dehaze in LR/ACR. Often the tiniest tweak to WB will also change contrast – always worth a look.
