Largemouth Bass Lurking

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

While strolling a segment of the C&O canal where there’s standing water, I noticed several Largemouth Bass. The clarity of the mid-spring water and my polarizer let the fish show well, with the subdued reflections providing nicely abstract surroundings.

Specific Feedback

Having this (I believe) female hanging out near a submerged log added something extra (drama??). Where I like the angled eye movement from the log to the fish to the stronger reflections.

Technical Details

R5, 100-500 @ 270, 1/100 s, f/8, iso 800, tripod and polarizer

Mark, looks like the fisherman’s delight here. I think a net would be easier than trying to hookem… :sunglasses:
I do think the log? does provide a connection that would be missing with just an open water scene. The ability to see the eye this well is testament to the water clarity and the overall image quality too,… :+1:

There’s a lot of detail and the red eye pulls in the viewer to this bass. Bass do require logs and aquatic vegetation for cover and including the log in the comp adds a nice feature to the natural history story of Mrs. Bass…Jim

Nice shot of the bass Mark. I do like the log to anchor the image a bit, along with the reflections in the ULC to provide balance overall. It is amazing how clear the water is to get such a nice view of the fish. It looks like a springtime bass read to lay eggs.
