I’ll leave the subject a mystery for now and solicit guesses. I was hoping to shoot some passion flowers this morning but the buds hadn’t opened yet so my consolation prize was this fearsome looking fang. I especially enjoyed watching the play of light and shadow on the subject and the BG. >=))>

There were some relatively bright areas along the right edge of the tooth. Toned down well enough?

Hi Bill, I’m don’t think I can figure out the mystery of what this plant is but I like it. The brown fan with yellow tip at the end of each petal adds texture and color. The dew top is the frosting on the cake. I like the soft background but I do see what you mean about a small sliver of light between petal and background. It’s a small nit but I bet you can fix it.

Looks like it might be one of your cactus buds, but I wouldn’t bet much on that guess, Bill. In any case it’s a very neat close-up image of it. You caught the dappled light beautifully.
For me this a study in light and shade - and very well seen
The dark and light on the top leaf is gorgeous
I imagine it would be one to try mono - and with a highish contrast it will have a lot of Wow
The Crop is excellent with the layering of the BG matching the curves of the leaves.
Then I zoom in I’m seeing some incongruous sharpening - often see in my own work. I would be interested if you consider not worrying so much about sharpness and playing with soft chiaroscuro with the shadows might be a delightful way to experiment??
Bill, the captured lighting on the subject is excellent. Diagonal comp is fine and the BG has enough variation to provide additional interest in the comp. I like this one as presented…Jim
No idea Bill - but I do know I love the light and details on this “tooth”. I like that the background is nicely separated too.
Not sure what you had to work with originally, but I’m wondering if a scosh more room on the left would help give this more breathing room. If no room, I think this might be a good candidate for a minimal transformation and stretch the canvas. But that’s a pretty minor suggestion.
I’m seconding @Jim_Gavin on a banana plant. (A small consolation for the climate down there…) There are some small artifacts – maybe from a handheld focus stack and sharpening that isn’t as intelligent as it would have us believe? But wonderful light on a wonderful subject! This is one to revisit often!
Bill, this is quite the fang. The details look very good and there’s a lot of interesting lighting to explore. Your handling along the right edge looks perfect. I have no idea about the plant’s ID.
Dennis: Kuai would be a lot more fun but if you want to go low budget just come visit me and we’ll walk about 100 yards down the street for this beauty. >=))>
