About This Image
I’ve been birding and doing bird photographer long enough to where I wouldn’t expect a lifer to show up in the backyard, but that’s what happened. I was eating dinner and happened to look out the window when this Mountain Quail flew in. I’ve never seen one before and they’re uncommon in the Willamette Valley. It stayed long enough for me to grab my camera and get a few shots off.

What, no knock on the front door from the Qual’s agent? The overall look is good, with good feather detail and eye contact. My very small nit would be the camera angle. (But I blame that on the agent).

HI Allen, congrats on the lifer. A really nice image especially for one that seems to be a bit of a grab shot. I’ve never seen or even heard of this bird. Very pretty species.

A wonderful opportunity and very well handled, Allen. Yes, a lower angle might have gotten more separation from the background, but given the circumstances, I think you did amazingly well. I’ve seen this in the bird guides, but never in person.

Very cool looking quail - I enjoyed reading how you took this image. The angle doesn’t bother me much seeing how this happened suddenly. Techs look great and the details on the quail are excellent. Congrats on this lifer!

That is a nice lifer to end up in your backyard. There’s a little bit of artifact stuff in the plumage from noise suppression, but the image quality is quite good for that high ISO. I like the pose with the feathers standing up on the head. Congrats on the lifer and well done capturing this quail…Jim
