Meadowlark Yoga

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

There were a lot of meadowlarks at the Sacramento NWR when I was there and I did manage to get some fairly nice images of them in habitat, but this one let me get close enough that I actually had to zoom out a bit to frame him properly and he probably gave me a good five minutes before he went on his way. Of course, he picked about the worst perch on the refuge to do so.

Specific Feedback

Birds like open perches with good escape routes and in this case probably for showing of to the ladies (at least in the first one). Does the perch detract too much from the singing image? Wish I’d used more shutter speed on the yoga pose.

Technical Details

Sony A1, FE 200-600 + 1.4 TC @ 552 mm for the first and 280 mm for the second. Hand held from car, f/9, 1/500, iso 1600. Processed in LR & PS CC.

Dennis, the first image is just super. The detail is excellent there. The distinct call or yodeling of these guys always brings back recall of an Aeromotor windmill I photographed and was serenaded to by one of these larks the hold time while it sat on the top blade of the fan.

Both so cool the perch is forgiven!! Wonderful color and detail! I am green with jealousy.

Dennis, in the first view, the wide open mouth, bit of tongue and stance dominate the viewing, so the perch is incidental. The colors in the background add nicely.

Dennis: “Meadowlark Yoga” made me  just for the title. I love the bird despite the perch but I appreciate the humor of the perch. Makes me want to sing myself. >=))>

Love both these images! The bird is giving you such great poses. It is a shame about the perch. The background is pretty near perfect.

Of COURSE he picked the “worst” perch - but with this fine image, it’s not a detriment.
Great singing pose - meadowlarks are so cool singing - and nice BG
