Project Description
Recently spent a morning on a photowalk at a nearby nature reserve. The main attraction (a really cool grotto) was interesting, but my eye always wants to find little details. This series is from that outing, exploring stuff that most folks probably overlook. The project is also an effort in B&W processing, working to emphasize what attracts my attention, and to separate it from whatever else is in the frame. Without being heavy-handed.
Most subjects in these images are about 3"-4" or less in size. The exception is the tree.
Self Critique
But not too much emphasis. The goal is for the images to make sense individually and as a whole. I think the tones and subject matter impart a certain mood (invoking natural things in a way that is self-explanatory) without being particularly heavy-handed.
I hope.
I love that this submission page leads off with the Brooks Jensen quote. That has haunted me for several years now, and I make every effort to think in terms of projects when I’m shooting, as well as culling and editing. Here, given the singular origin of the images, it’s a question of consistency and relevance. There are images here that probably don’t belong, so I am open to thoughts about cohesiveness, as well as anything else about the overall impact.
Creative Direction
Given my propensity for macro work, and nature, I’d probably call this sort of project “Nature Unnoticed”. My goal would be to encourage folks to slow down and discover all the things that are waiting to be found. I haven’t made the effort to pull together every image of this type that I have, but I think that’s the next step.
Specific Feedback
Particular feedback? No. The relevant factors in doing a project are culling, clarity, and consistency. Those are hard to do alone.
If you have the time to comment, I want to hear anything and everything you would like to share; Aesthetic, Emotional, Technical. Your thoughts are valid.
Intent of the project
Magazine Submission
Additional Details: Creating a project about which I have confidence enough to submit to a magazine or a contest would be a milestone.
