Lately I’ve been trying to learn patterns to photograph the kingfishers at my neighborhood lake. The grass around the state park pond is not getting cut and it is tick paradise this summer.
The top two images are at a dead tree perch at eye level over the lake. In the other images, I have staked out various locations to try to catch the birds in flight.
WOW 5X!!! Amazing detail for these fast-moving guys. All are just stunning but my favorite is the first for the look s(he) is giving you, complete with a wren-flick of the tail.
Fine series, Allen. Great captures, all. Looks like you caught both the male and female. The lighting and background perfectly set off the subject. Very good wing positions on them as well. Congrats on a set of fine images.
Oh my…these are so great, especially the flying shots. Really excellent technique that I can’t find a way to improve. So many wing positions and head feather shapes. They really are fun birds and so much smaller than their personalities make them seem.
The first image is certainly the best in my opinion. I like the head turn and pose which shows off those short stubby kingfisher feet. The others are also quite good with different wing positions. Awesome series…Jim
Patience and perseverance. A full library of technical know-how and experience. And a small sprinkling of luck. That is what you need for pictures like this (not baited, not from a hide). Whow! Each and everyone tels the story of these marvellous mini-birds. Nice catches, all of them.
As for ticks, for high risk areas (i.e. tall grass) I wear long pants and hiking shoes and usually long sleeve shirts. I spray with 40% deet repellent. I have on occasion tucked my pants legs into my hiking socks. I also have friends that spray permethrin on their clothes the night before an outing.
I have also on occasion simply avoided high tick count areas such as the state park pond here as I end up picking several ticks off my clothes even with precautions used.
