While in the process of composing this view of short grass prairie near Castle Trail in Badlands National Park, punctuated by sharp rocks protruding skyward, a male redwing blackbird (Agelaius phoeniceus) landed atop the small tree on the left one-third of the frame. He remained there long enough to be included in the image as he serenade me and scanned his territory.
