Potholes

Description

Kind of second hand water erosion, but that’s often the case. I found this rock on Rialto Beach in Olympic National Park last month. It’s roughly a foot across at the widest and I liked the way there were so many pebbles in the holes to illustrate how they were formed. Rialto has some pretty significant tides and it’s a high energy beach, so this rock is usually submerged at least part of every day and often a good share of it. It may well be buried or moved the next time I go there.

Specific Feedback

I had the wrong lens on my camera for this shot, so being lazy, I just shot a jpeg with my cell phone. I increased saturation in the surrounding area because I always like the colorful pebbles amongst the gray and black. Any issues with processing?

Technical Details

Samsung Glaaxy S24 ultra, hand held, 7.9 mm, iso 50, 1/60, f/2.4. Processed in LR and PS. Used Topaz Studio 2 to adjust microcontrast in the subject and bring out texture. Cropped a bit vertically to 4000x2774. Taken at 9:00 a.m. on January 24th.

A very nice image with a smart phone capture. Detail is quite good and I like the small stones that were deposited on the rock via wave action…Jim

Dennis, almost looks like an aerial view of an island landmass. Definitely unique find here. The rise and fall of the formation adds to the island feel. The various potholes filled with debris of pebbles and water also present the miniature island look of the hard rock structure. … :star_struck:

Dennis: I’ve only been to Rialto twice but I do recall the pebble beach. This is a great find and a fine capture regardless of gear. Scenes like this make me wonder how long it has taken for this rock to get to this point and what did it start out as? Really well done. >=))>

Dennis, this is an excellent find, where you are showing of the “micro” erosion well. Both the details in the large rock and the pebbles show beautifully. You’ve got a good glow from the wet pebbles and the come with a nice mix of colors.
