Primroses - a first sign of Spring

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

At this time of year our garden and fields are showing all the signs of emerging from Winter’s gloom and for me the Primrose is a flower that brings me joy. I remember one of my very first photographs of them when I was a child - they were huddled against a churchyard wall basking (if a flower can bask!) in the Spring sunshine. That was a good few years ago, but the memory remains. I love the curve of the stems of these two flowers and the way the seem to be joined together.

Specific Feedback

I’ve gone for a soft-ish feel to the image - is that working for this subject? This is my first post for critique, but any other feedback welcomed!

Godfrey, welcome to NPN and the Weekly Challlenge! This is a great look at this primrose pair. We have primroses lining one side of the walkway leading to our front door and their early color is a highlight of spring. (Ours don’t have the longer stem, like yours.) I like the dynamic range in the yellow tones, it gives the flowers a nice glow. The background is nicely painterly.

Welcome, Godfrey. This is a lovely introduction to your work. The pair of blooms is facing the sun in a reverent sort of way and the background blur is perfect. Really nice framing.

I’m looking forward to seeing more of your work.

Godfrey: Welcome to NPN. My only concern about this image is that you have really set a high bar for yourself. This is wonderfully composed, captured and presented. Superbly crafted image. :+1: :+1:>=))>

Welcome to NPN and this one is top notch. The flowers with subtle yellows show up well against the dark BG which has enough color to complement the colors of the subject. I have no nits for you and like this photo as presented…Jim

Godfrey,

Welcome to NPN. Wonderful first post and so well composed. I love the soft feel to the photo and great use of the shallow DOF. A nice portrait of the Primrose blossoms and taken like a protrait photographer. Nice.

Welcome aboard, Godfrey. That is a beautiful capture of this subject and the background helped very well to show off the colors of the flowers. Nice blend of contrast in the color. Excellent photo image.

Welcome to NPN, Godfrey. What a nice shot to post. I love the curves of the stems and how both blooms are aimed in the same direction. Great composition. Well done!

Thank you Shirley :slightly_smiling_face: - Godfrey

A lovely composition, Godfrey. I really like the background in this image.

A really soft, pleasing image — the yellow tones work beautifully and give it a calm, painterly feel, with the two flowers sitting naturally together.

There’s a slight heaviness in the darker greens and background which pulls the eye down a touch, and the greens beneath the petals feel a little subdued by comparison. A gentle lift there could help the balance.

Otherwise nicely handled, just a couple of small artefacts on closer look. The border feels slightly out of keeping with the softness.

A strong image overall, with only subtle refinements needed.

Thanks for the detailed critique Matthew, and welcome to NPN - hope you enjoy your time on here my friend :slightly_smiling_face:
