Sipapu Bridge + REPOST

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

This was an early morning take on the Sipapu Bridge at Natural Bridges National Monument in Utah. I was lucky as the light from the overcast sky was fairly soft and not overly glaring.
The opposite of my previous post of a subterranean or underground water erosion slot canyon this is obviously an above ground water eroded canyon over ions of years.

Paul, this is lovely. The variety of color in the rocks show well. The green trees leading under the bridge to the bit of sky and rocks in the distance make a dynamic view that is set off well by the mostly cloudy sky.

Paul:

Natural bridges national monument is one of my favorite places in the Pacific Southwest. And yes, you were right. You have to be there when the atmospheric conditions are just right in order to get a decent shot without too much in the way of harsh shadows. The natural bridges in the monument are spectacular. Photographing them is really difficult. I find not only only because of the light because of where you can be with respect to the arch or bridge the image you have posted is excellent.

A beautiful image and I really like the angle you used to photograph this one, Paul. I don’t know how much processing you do after scanning, but the shadowed foreground structure of the arch loses a bit of the fine water made detail and I think it would be pretty easy to select it in whatever software you’re using and boost the detail a bit using your favorite technique for that task.

Dennis, excellent call there. I think I got it brought out OKAY, hopefully not too much. I’ve got it layered for change if needed… :+1:

For my taste, you nailed the repost, Paul. Excellent work.

@Mark_Seaver @David_Schoen @Dennis_Plank …thank you each for the reviews and comments on this scene. Amazing to see the gap between the bottom of the bridge and the present day riverbed or flashflood zone at the bottom here. Hard for me to grasp that much erosion…

Paul, the extra light in the repost does a good job of balancing the viewing. Grasping geological time scales, is hard for us humans… I chuckle when folks tell me that Yellowstone is overdue for a major eruption. Yes, the three “YNP” eruptions are spaced an average of 750,000 years apart, but the error bar on that average is 20,000-30,000 years and our lifespan is roughly 70 - 90 year range.

Hi Paul,
You certainly had optimal lighting conditions and I love the vantage point you chose as it gives the viewer a wonderful peak through the arch and into the BG rock formations. The clouds are also a big plus in this scene. For my tastes your small tweak with the slight lightening of those couple of areas suggested by @Dennis_Plank pretty much nailed it. Beautifully done!

Paul: Mea culpa for being so late to this party but the good news for me is that the repost is in place and marvelous. Utah is a place that I’ve only barely explored in Zion and Bryce so this is a double treat. The comp is excellent and I especially like what you did with the sky. Luck happens to those who are prepared so you took great advantage of the conditions. Most excellent. >=))>
