Snowing in the Park

Image(s)

Image Description

On my return from a visit to the Lamar Area of Yellowstone last May, it started snowing. As I approached the Lamar River Bridge, I was taken by the snow on the Sage and how the view across the river faded away.

Snow doesn’t get any fresher than when it’s falling, in this case pretty heavily although the road was clear. It’s not your usual YNP view.

Mark: May!?!? Well of course. We visited Yellowstone in mid June 2001 and had to set up our tent in the Canyon CG in 8" of snow. What a magical place and I love how your own love for the place shows through in your images. It so makes me want to be there. Most excellent. >=))>

Bill, I get a big kick out of telling folks that I have been snowed on in Yellowstone every month of the year, except February (I have yet to get into the park in February…). One Forth of July, it was chilly (in the 40s with light rain) when the rain turned to snow. There were a number of young women checking out the falls in their short shorts and halter tops as they shivered strongly… I also remember learning the hard way about the effect of altitude on temperature in Rocky Mountain Natl. Park as a child. In 2010, there was so much snow that Canyon campground didn’t open until July.

Hi Mark, I had to go into my archives to remember what the Lamar valley looked like without snow, so I pretty much recognize your location here. Interesting how the falling snow looks like fog. Your inclusion of the foreground vegetation plus the barely-seen background trees really create a sense of depth in the whole scene. Well done!

A lovely snow scene, Mark. For some reason the fallen logs in the patch of woods really add a nice touch for my taste.

The varied tones give great depth and texture to the image. Great composition and edit.
