Spring Awakening

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

This is a crop of a shot of an entire mountainside of aspens in Colorado, with one group starting to leaf out. I loved the light green color of the new leaves and the veil of the thousands of white tree trunks.

Specific Feedback

Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated. I struggled for a while with the composition, so I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Hi Scott, I just love this. The subtle green just beginning, the many that haven’t begun. Difficult I can imagine to arrive at a composition here, but I’d say you nailed it. Maybe just a tich more above the the green left of center? But there may have been only more green….I especially love the darker underlying “peak’ in the lower half. It gives it all a bedrock of structure.

Excellent, Scott. the green leaves with that particular shade just scream spring and against all the white aspen trunks it’s very effective.

Love this Scott. It’s striking how all the vertical white trunks and horizontal layering give this an abstract look. Viewed from a couple feet away, it has a one dimensional look, which is a good thing in that it gives it the abstract feel, Imho.

I love the picture!
My brain is somehow permanently switching between double exposure yes/no
I love that. Anything else has been said already

I’ll echo Scott, this has great contrasts. There are horizontal layers contrasting with the vertical trunks, and the green contrasts nicely with the with the white of the trunks that are more bare. Nice example of winter changing to spring.

Hi Scott,
I will have to say that I am loving this and find it very striking! The large version is a real treat with all of those textures and details for the viewer to savor. I also think the vertical lines of the aspens contrast beautifully with the horizontal format as well as the horizontal bands of layering giving this image a wonderful sense of depth. The spring greens are amazing and I like the subdued color palette as well. Beautifully done IMO.

Thank you @Connie_McClaran , @Michael_Lowe , @Dennis_Plank , @John_Williams , @Ralf_Mantzel , and @Ed_Lowe for taking the time to comment!

This is fantastic, Scott. I don’t have much to add here except that I couldn’t quite wrap my head around it until I looked at it full size. Initially, I thought it was a reflection, but then the dark ridge was not oriented correctly. Very nice, both real, abstract, a little confusing, and very lovely.

A wonderful picture, Scott. The colors are pure spring to me. If you interpret the image abstractly, it has a very clear and emotional message. After all, everyone is familiar with the bare forests and the first light green of early spring.
