Te Puia Geothermal zone- Rotorua, New Zealand

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

Te Puia - Rotorua, NZ. This is a Geothermal area at the edge of Rotorua. I took this photo because the contrast of the yellow / brown / grey caught my eye. An interesting area of traditional art and geysers, triggering my imagination of art and the juxtaposition, Hades.

Specific Feedback

I cannot decide how to improve this photo, be it the crop or anything else. This is pretty much how my mind saw it, but I just cannot see how I could make it better. Good people, please help, or maybe I should just leave alone.

Technical Details

Canon 90D with 120mm zoom lens (180mm eq), 1/320 sec, F10, ISO 200.
Levels, vignett added rhs, sharpened

Rob, the subject is fascinating. The right and left sides of the image, though, don’t seem to have much to do with each other, and the combination of the two isn’t really working for me. I can’t think of any changes that would make a significant difference. Your subject makes it difficult to find an effective composition.

@Rob_Sykes I think this is pretty cool. I like the colours contrasting each other. The current right side doesn’t hold a lot of interest for me, so I’m wondering if you have room on the left to extend the edge to move the yellow water to the right, and then cut off some of the current right, perhaps all the way to the first upright mineral column.

Maybe something like this ? (I allowed Gen Fill to add some left canvas)

VERY Neat find -

@SandyR-B @Don_Peters

I slept on this one and thought that I might withdraw the post as it was so confusing. I agree that this is actually two photos, one of the grey deposits and another of the coloured areas. Neither have much to do with each other and both vie for attention. There is nothing in the photo to the right of that shown and I do not have a similar photo showing more. I tried a crop (attached) but that shows I am trying to rescue a failed photo. Thanks for your help.

I may post another of this particular area.

Thanks for your help.

Rob, I think your second effort is a much stronger image than the first post.

@Rob, if you have no room on the left for my idea, your new crop works well. IMO, it’s not a “failed” image to be trashed.

For what it’s worth (I’m a total newbie to this) I love the contrasting colors and textures in your original photo.

Thank you all for your help
