THE LAKE'S LOW TIDE | Like an ocean tide, winter draws the water back.

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I’ve been experimenting with up-close triptych panels to show details of nature that are hard to get across in one image – but may not be worth showing three full photographs.

Specific Feedback

Partly, I’d like to know what you think of the triptych concept for this type of subject. And, I shy away from making things too vibrant, but do you think I should enhance the colors more?

This is a super cool idea! I really like the way (starting from the left) the grass is the upper/mid of the frame, the center image has grass at the bottom, and right photo is all spread throughout. I like the more muted color. My one thought is the middle frame the ice is really bright compared to the more muted ice in the side panels. I wonder what it would look like to make that ice a bit darker? Very cool idea!

Hey Curtis – I have also worked in threes, but as separate metal prints to be hung together, rather than a triple may. My comment here is the center image is zoomed in closer, and so for me, it creates an issue of consistency. I ordered a trio of closeups of tidepools and didn’t realize until I got them back from the printer that one looks more like a mid-range landscape than a closeup like the others. Decided they don’t work together! Your center image is also, to me, the strongest in detail and contrast. I’d go shoot some more of these great targets with an emphasis on ice patterns and the weathered grasses.

Great comments. I’m very much at a “fun with photography” stage with triptyches. The idea of printing on metal opens up new options. Here’s an article I’ve using as my guide. Others may find it useful. https://abstractedreality.com/the-triptych-cut-7-options-for-arranging-your-panels/
