About This Image

The lichen patterns and the crack in the rock: I wonder which came first? I would guess the lichens. Or did some primeval force split the rock a long time ago?

Feedback Requested

Would the effect be greater if I darkened the paler part of the crack vertical?

Mike, this looks fine as presented. I don’t think you want the crack darker. The details in the lichen and the stone look very good. I like the subtle blues in the stone and the good variety of greys in the lichen. What seeing into the crack shows is that the crack came first, since there are lichen growing down the side.

Personally i like the “painterly” pattern of the lichen - In fact, i suggest lightening th R side of the crack to match the left - my 2 cents…

I really like this image. The textures and patterns along with the diagonal component Make this image work quite well.

This is very cool, Mike. In the thumbnail, I thought it was a branch on the lichen covered rock, so it was a surprise to see the crack which fits the challenge even better. I suspect the lichen started first since it seems to just be getting started colonizing the crack faces. I’ve always liked lichen covered rocks and this is a real beauty.

Mike: @Dennis_Plank took the words right out of my mouth. I was expecting a branch also but this is so much better. Great textures and patterns that hold attention really well. Most excellent.>=))>

Beautiful work. I like it very much and would not change a thing.

Mike,

Love this! Great find and even better job recognizing the potential here.

To me, the crack almost looks “fresh” like it recently happened - at least relative to how long the lichen has been establishing itself.

I’m not sure if Karl meant the actual crack, OR the lichen covered surface, but I was going to suggest that the lichen above the crack be burned/darkened a skosh to match the luminosity below the crack. Hope that makes sense. It’s a pretty miniscule suggestion though.

Otherwise, no other nits or suggestions for improvement. Excellent as posted!

Thank you @Bill_Fach @Dennis_Plank @Mark_Seaver @Igor_Doncov @Karl_Zuzarte @Lon_Overacker - I think I’ll leave it as is, but really appreciate your comments.
