Description
I was at Merritt Island NWR in Florida as part of a workshop in March 2026. We spent a morning photographing birds in a large open water area of Black Point Wildlife Drive. The water was very still and we were lucky to see many birds (and alligators) that morning. This heron was one of many hunting in the area, and I was so happy to see this photo when I started processing.
Specific Feedback
Contrast and color - too much or too little? The bird was in breeding plumage and this is really how it looked that morning. Any other comments appreciated.

This is such a lovely image. The attitude of the heron, the turbulence in the water behind, and the completely placid water ahead, combined with the gorgeous colors of the bird and high key background: It’s all very artistic and reminds me of a painting or even an oriental ceramic vase or something. I like the contrast, saturation and the effect of those choices and the conditions. I have no suggestions!
I’m looking forward to seeing what others have to say.
I love this image! Essential and with splendid pose and colors. Really beautiful. Maybe, maybe a slight crop above and below to give it a more elongated aspect, but that’s a minor point.

Hi Debbie, I like the reflection captured and the inclusion of just the right amount of trailing water. I also like the crop in the repost. Increasing exposure and saturation to this level produced quite a painterly look to the bird.
