About This Image
This is a series of photographs from a Bald Eagle workshop in Upper Washington State. On the first morning, we will drive out to Hood Canal to photograph the Eagles and Great Blue Herons.

This was my first day using a spot meter and all manual settings on my Z8. What do you think?
Technical Details
Z8, Nikon 180-600mm & 1.4ext, 790mm, 840 & 690mm, f9 & f11, 1/2000, ISO 2000, 2500 & 1250. The photographs were processed in DXO PhotoLab 9 using masks to press the background and birds.
I wish I had known you were coming out for this. I have been to this workshop several times and so has Dennis. You did a good job with these images. It’s a very pleasant area and a good place to see both herons and eagles interacting.
Your exposures on the eagles are perfect. Looks like you had really good lighting conditions.

Yeah, that part of Hook canal is pretty nice. I think that Dennis and I camped out in one of the local state parks. But we’ve done trips with Nate Chappelle and Ken archer before. I did a real nice trip to San Diego with Ken. And Nate was on our trip to Costa Rica at least part of the time. They were really good trips.

Good job on the eagles, Peter. My first ever workshop was going there with Nate many moons ago and he taught me the same thing for exposing the whites. Luckily, there always seems to be something white available that you can use to check the exposure. Your detail in both the white and dark portions of the plumage is excellent. That area has gotten a bit too popular for my taste, though I know Ken worked out a deal with a local property owner that gets the workshop away from the crowds.
Hi Peter. Excellent. Fine exposure and detail on the birds and I like the flight poses. Looks like a great area for in flight shooting.

Thank you for the comments. We did have a sweet spot to photograph the action, and sometimes it came from the tall trees right behind us.
