About This Image

I left the tanager purposefully small in the frame. I played around a lot with the background light and tried to create a vignetting effect with the foreground leaves. I thought the Spanish Moss was a nice addition.

I knew this had to be yours from the minute I saw it, Allen. This is a gorgeous image. The only suggestion I have for it is doing something to reduce the brightness of the string of very bright blobs immediately in front of the tanager. The rest of the relatively bright background doesn’t bother me, but those form a line that leads away from the bird.

Very beautiful, Allen. I love how you’ve shown it wreathed in oak leaves. Dennis’s suggestion I’d second, an easy fix. It looks like it might have been singing (with a string of saliva across its beak!).

Very lovely composition! I think you might darken the area toward the right border a bit, to balance the dark left – just a bit. It almost looks as though you did that a slight amount. I tried a little more, with a quick mask with a large soft brush to not darken the leaves more. It came out a bit on the brown side and I didn’t change the color, but pushing it more toward green would be good – easy to do with the color channels in the curve adjustment layer I used.

And a PS – the “moss” is Lace Lichen – ever present in the PNW. Spanish Moss is found in the warmer climates of the SE US.

Thanks for your input, @Dennis_Plank , @Mike_Friel , and @Diane_Miller . I’ve reposted based on your suggestions. Thanks for the ID, Diane. I’ve been calling it the wrong name for some 60+ years.

The original poster added a revised version of their image.

Hi Allen

The revision look better. The back ground really helps hi light the Western Tanager.

I like the repost, Allen. Still that inviting background without the distractions.

Your revised version works well for me. The oval lighter portion of the BG framed by leaves provides a window-like feature to the image. The tanager is nice and sharp and like the pose too…Jim
