White-Headed Woodpecker

I normally try and avoid the square crop, but it felt right for this image. What do you think?

Really nice look at the woodpecker. Nice perch and background. The crop works for me. There’s a balance between the perch and bird and enough background surrounding the bird.

Excellent exposure, detail, and background. The square crop is balanced and works well.

This crop seems to work fine, Dave. I like the feel of it. Excellent job on the exposure and a beautiful perch.

Excellent exposure, whites and blacks are excellent.
Crop works for me.
I might darken the perch.

Hi David,

Nothing wrong with this crop. Woodpeckers defy norms when compared to images of perching birds. You could darken the perch slightly, but I think this image looks fine as presented…Jim

David, you have excellent detail, a nice bit of catchlight and good pose, and what’s most favorable for me is how you handled the exposure - blacks, whites and mid-tones, all excellent! The square is o.k. but I think a vertical favoring the top would work better, that’s assuming you have room for a favorable image.

I’ve never seen a White-headed Woodpecker. I think this is a beautiful photo, well exposed, sharp detail and nice contrasting background. I like the way the bird from tail tip to head forms a nice diagonal in the square crop so it works well for me.

Excellent shot in every aspect, David!

Good work on the blacks and whites, David. I may be tempted to darken the image just a bit, but it’s great as poste. I’m not for square crops, but here it’s not a show stopper for sure ! Cheers, Hans
