White Sands Morning

Soft, warm, low-angle morning sunlight, below clouds from the previous night’s rain, strike the great wave-like dunes of glistening gypsum sand rising from White Sands NM in the heart of the Tularosa Basin of New Mexico.

Well deserved photo of the day on Outdoor Photographer!

Thank you, Ms. Smith. I am humbled to be recognized in the premier photography journal for more than 35 years. I am also surprised anyone here at Nature Photographers Network might notice my contributions there.

I like the contrast between light and dark in this image coupled with the intense texture of the sand. Makes for a dramatic and moody scene, well done!

Thank you, Kieth. Conditions are always important for any photograph. Because it had rained the previous night the surface was still relatively compact and highly textured. The low angled sunlight enhanced that. When the sand is dry, the wind is blowing and the sun is higher the sand is soft and smooth. Only the larger structures convey any form.
