About This Image
This photo was taken in January 2026 at the Whitewater Draw Wildlife Area in southeastern Arizona. Thousands of Sandhill Cranes gather here during their winter migration. There are so many of these birds all gathered close together that it is challenging to photograph them and get some separation. This one image was one of my favorites of the day I was there.
Feedback Requested
I would like some feedback regarding the composition. Despite the overlap of some of the birds I still feel that this composition works, and the reflection in the water creates a mood of serenity that I felt while being there. Any other suggestions would be welcome. Thanks for looking.

Hi Ted. Even before I read your comments, I too, felt the image created a sense of peace and calmness. I don’t mind the overlapping birds, I think it gives the viewer an idea of the avian environment. I wouldn’t mind more room on the top and bottom. For me, there’s a tight feeling that conflicts with the sense of calmness.
Ted, I also get a sense of serenity in this image. I am especially drawn to the bird in the middle where we can see the face and eyes. This seems to be a good representation of these birds together and the time you spent with them. The sharpness throughout on the birds adds to this feel. I could see a bit more room on top. Well done.

Hi Ted: I like this image and it does have that peaceful feel. The only thing that really bothers me is the left edge. [S1] the eye contact and single leg work really well. It also brings in the two birds on the right.
[Crop] I feel that the snag with the crane behind it distracts from the main group and doesn’t continue the sense of serenity that you’re trying to convey. The suggested crop does includ parts of birds on the left, which I’d also remove.
Hi Ted. The reflections steal the show and provide a sense of peace and tranquility. I might add space at the top if you are inclined to leave the snag at the left within the frame. Other than that, the pano crop works well and the various poses of the cranes generates complexity and interest in the scene…Jim
