Woodpecker feeding its hatchling

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

On a hike in the foothills of Mt. Diablo. I had stopped to rest and saw this woodpecker make repeated landings on the tree. I just waited around to see what was going on and finally the hatchling stuck its head out. The bird itself is very colorful but seeing it feed it hatchling and catching its very quick passing of the acorns was a unique experience to view and photograph.

Specific Feedback

Is the cropping appropriate or should have been tighter ? Bokeh is okay but could it be more blurred for a beter effect on the image

What a cool shot, Don. I see a lot of Acorn Woodpeckers where I live, but never their nesting behavior. Good detail in the birds. I like the environmental aspect of the image, so I’m fine with the crop.

The crop works for me, Don. It looks like you could have stopped down a bit more as the adult is just slightly soft, though not enough to be a deal breaker. I’m fine with the background. Interesting that they plumage on the youngster looks identical to the adult.

Hi Don, I like the crop and environmental background. Great to see the young one about to be fed. I imagine you could go with higher ISO/narrower aperture to get a bit more DOF on the two birds in this situation. Still a terrific image.
