What changed: Thanks for all your comments - the more I look at it, the more I like the suggested cropped version without the V-shaped sky that misleads the eye. I cropped it also a tiny bit on the left - because esp. in this version the black trunk near the bottom also distracts.

About This Image
I only had my mobile phone with me that day. I had travelled to Hamburg to help my daughter move, but a huge snowfall made the move impossible. So instead, we went for a walk in the Fischbeker Heide, an area that is usually best known for its blooming heath in late summer.
What attracted me to this scene was how completely the snow had transformed the landscape. With most of the color gone, the dark trunks and twisting branches became almost like lines drawn across a white sheet of paper. I deliberately kept the path in the center of the composition. To me, it feels almost like an open doorway into the woods, providing a quiet space among all those intricate lines and inviting the eye to enter the scene. Looking at the image again for this challenge, the branches reminded me of handwriting or brushstrokes — an intricate kind of calligraphy created by the forest itself.

I’d be interested to hear whether the idea of “natural calligraphy” comes across to you, or whether the complexity of the forest makes the image feel too busy. Any thoughts on the composition and the balance between the graphic lines of the trees and the open white areas are very welcome.

Horst - I think this image does work very well and the calligraphy aspect does come through. The trees balance very nicely from either side of the path and i like the two V’s top and bottom. Overall, very nice balance and a feeling of calm, in my view.
The bright tones in the top V draw my eye and if i have any suggestion, I would try reducing those while perhaps lightening the tones of the bottom V a hair so that they are more balanced.
All that is FWIW, of course. Overall, a lovely image. i can hear the silence in the snow coming through very clearly. Well done.
Very nicely done, Horst. I hadn’t really thought of it until reading the @Doug_Wilson critique, but when I did the bright area in the top center instantly became a magnet for my eyes. I played with a simple “scroll crop” under most of that large limb coming in on the upper right and it changed the whole image, giving the trees a lot more dominance and opening up the view with less vertical distance in the image. It wouldn’t have the same effect on a print, but on our 9x16 screens it does.
To me the dark lines of the branches do evoke the feeling of calligraphy, so I think this image fits the challenge well.
I came here to say pretty much what Dennis said above. I love the contrast here, and the stark dark lines against the ethereal whites. I would crop to remove the dangling branch just left of middle and most of the biggest heaviest branch. It does change the image a good bit, and in my mind, it makes it a bit more peaceful and orderly. That may not be what you’re after though, so feel free to take that suggestion with a grain of salt, toss it over the shoulder, and call this one done. I like it as presented as well.

I like the revision, but I’ll confess that I like a tiny bit of V above. I think all three (original, revised, and the one I’ll share below) work. It’s a gorgeous scene, well seen and well shot. For me, a tiny bit of the sky makes it feel more open. That might not be what you were hoping for, but for me, it lightens the mood.
I would even maybe go a little lower than I show below. What I notice is that when the sky is gone, I look at the trees themselves more, and it becomes more abstract. When there is a little sky, I look at the entire scene and imagine walking the path. When there is a lot of sky, I look at the sky.
Note: sometimes when I do a download and crop, the color or luminosity changes. That’s not intentional nor a suggestion. I’m just demonstrating the crop and have difficulty dialing it in precisely with our system’s crop tool.
