I am a professional artist working primarily in the landscape of my home, the woods, lakes, mountains, and streams of New York State. My interest in photographing landscapes is derived mainly from my love of the natural world, the same love that led me to choose geology as my first profession. The skills I have learned as a scientist, the attention to detail and careful observation, as well as a deep understanding of the natural world, have helped me immensely as an artist.
For me, the appeal of photography lies in the opportunity to create art in an environment that ceaselessly inspires and invigorates me. In photography I strive to make images that are a reflection of my sensibilities and how I see the world, which by definition means I am creating something truly unique, as seen through my eyes alone. My goal is to make images that are not about place, but rather a creative expression of my response to that place. With time I have realized that my best work comes from areas with which I am most familiar and have a deep connection. Ultimately I wish for my work to reflect what it is to me, a celebration of the creative experience in nature.
