In addition to making images of the Monterey Bay area, Big Sur, the Eastern Sierra, and the wildlife refuges of the Central Valley, I synthesize my photography with my storytelling, writing, and book design skills by publishing artistic photobooks. I was honored that my artist’s book Crane Songs: A Story of Dis-placement recently won second place in the International Photography Awards (IPA) Lucie Awards (non-pro) for self-published books. In 2017, my photo “Snow Geese, Merced National Wildlife Refuge” was selected by NANPA as one of the top 250 images in the Showcase. In 2016 a photograph of mine was featured in the Yosemite Renaissance Gallery show.
My mother and father gifted me with a love for the landscapes of the West by taking me on camping trips, where I first discovered landscape photography. When I was a teenager, I longed to be a nature photographer. That love of nature inspired me to study environmental studies at UC Santa Cruz, but serious pursuit of photography was not possible for me at that age. Instead, I honed my craft as a writer and small press book publisher. For twenty years, I ran a nationally known feminist press called HerBooks. I wrote a memoir and a novel, ran marathons, and devoted myself to a fulfilling (and still ongoing) career as an oral historian at the UCSC Library. The emergence of digital technology made it possible for me to return to landscape photography and immerse myself in its craft.
I am interested in creating more artist’s books and doing more project-based conservation photography.
