A different perspective

It’s been quite a while since I’ve been active here. I lurk on occasion, but generally do not engage much as I have generally found myself craving real-world interactions over virtual ones. Over the past few years, I’ve left many social media art/photography groups and forums. That being said, I do value thoughtful online banter and thought that I should make efforts to participate in the few online groups and forums I appreciate. NPN is one of these!
I have recently decided to return to full-time work as a Respiratory Therapist. Previously I went to part-time/per diem so as to “more seriously” pursue photography as a professional. Although I wouldn’t say that decision was a mistake per se, I would say that my creativity and thus love for photography took a hit. Marketing over making, monetizing over moment, exposure over experience.
I still sell a few of my pieces here and there with just organic involvement in local galleries and community; financial freedom helps me remain true to my creative voice.
I appreciate all that pursue their expression of the wild places and hope to see myself engaging here more regularly.

Welcome back, Bob!

I too have recently returned after a years-long absence from NPN. Although our reasons are different, I completely understand.

That’s a nice tree tryptych! We are looking forward to seeing more of your work.

Rob,

Welcome back to NPN and so glad you decided to re-engage. I can sincerely relate to most of what you wrote. From the in-person ineractions vs. online; being in nature and out creating images, rather than processing and marketing… So many I’m quite certain feel the same.

I too had dreams and pursued marketing my work - wasn’t driven necessarily to make it a career, but certainly I wanted exposure and to sell enough to pay for my advanced “hobby.” I had the letterhead, the PO Box, the business cards, a few gallery showings, spending oodles on printing and framing - so much so that I did it all myself to save $. I submitted to stock agencies, got published in a local calendars, a book cover… i was all over the map. Bottom line, I sucked at marketing myself and eventually succomed back to the happy side and just enjoyed my passion of being in and photographing the great outdoors.

Anyway, as usual I ramble on… but wanted to acknowledge and to say I think there are many here have similar stories. And I too have a huge appreciation and respect for those photographers who are able to balance it all and make a living from this.

We’ll look forward to your images and contributions. Oh, and the Triptych is wondefrul!

Lon,
I appreciate your response and to know that there are others that have had the same experience. I prefer to be free of the opinions of the fickle masses or experts or whatever and simply create as I see fit. If those that follow my work appreciate it with a purchase, then outstanding. If not, so be it!
Thanks again Lon!
