Alaskan Northern Lights

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

We had the good fortune to go up out of Fairbanks last week to cross seeing the aurora borealis off of out bucket list. Here’s one of my favorite captures that I got from the deck our modern igloo we were staying in. This was taken at 12:52am. T’was magical.

Specific Feedback

First time for me shooting the northern lights. I only allowed a bit of the dark foreground’s texture. Seemed like the thing to do, and I did not dodge out the upper RH corner. I thought it kinda worked to frame the aurora a bit.

Technical Details

Z9, Nikon 14-24 lens, tripod, cropped to 7309 x 5263, 20 seconds, f 3.5, 14mm, ISO 1250.

Magical, indeed. Looks like you had the place almost to yourselves.

Congratulations on finally getting to see it! It’s not something you can count on. Looks like you were lucky the clouds weren’t worse. For me, the huts are not a great feature, although it does tell a story. The sky is good quality and I agree the dark vignette in the corner is a good feature – it feels authentic.

Seeing Lady Aurora is so magical!
The image gives me a feeling of peace.
I appreciate seeing the stars in focus so nicely here.
