Amaryllis in our backyard

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I spent quite a while trying to figure out how to photograph these flowers. I started off photographing entire blossoms. They weren’t very appealing or photogenic and lots of unwanted background came through in the empty spaces around the petals. I wound up using a 17-40mm lens at close range. I also had a nine-stop ND filter in place, which I don’t think made any difference in the result. This may not have been the best solution.

Specific Feedback

I’m mostly interested in whether the overall composition works. All comments about any aspect of the shot are welcome.

Technical Details

ISO 100, 38mm, f/8, 30 seconds.

I like the composition you ended up with, Don, you have an excellent eye for forms. Initially the idea of having the pistil and stamens pointing out of the frame in the upper right bothered me a bit, but the more I look at it the more natural that feels. I think you ended up with an unusual and effective composition for this plant.

Thanks, Dennis.
